When Restoration Meets AI: Lessons from an Impressionist Painting

In this presentation, we discuss a nineteenth-century impressionist painting that has undergone a series of investigations, culminating in an AI evaluation of its authenticity. We show how restoration choices and varying levels of expertise can affect a painting’s appearance and the evidence it carries—sometimes in ways that complicate later attribution decisions. Against this backdrop, we explore how artificial intelligence and traditional conservation expertise can work hand in hand. By combining these complementary forms of expertise, it becomes possible to arrive at a more complete, nuanced, and defensible assessment of a painting’s authenticity and condition.
